Estimating is very difficult for students. It just feels unnatural for them. They want to figure the "real" answer.

Estimation is an important skill because it’s a mental math strategy that adults use in their everyday lives.

Estimation is a higher-level skill that students should be practicing all year.

The Common Core Standards require estimation at every grade level. In fourth grade the students are required to use place value to round multi-digit whole numbers. They are also required to use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.

This packet includes everything you will need to practice and review estimation, mental math and multi-step word problems. This packet correlates to the common core standard 4.OA.3. This packet includes the estimating sums and differences game, the mental math game, word problems and counters.
