How I Monitor My Baby

When my son was first born I did not have a baby monitor. I had planned on getting one but it was just one of those things that didn’t get done before he arrived.

The first couple of weeks, it wasn’t a big deal. I was a new mom and didn’t leave his side very often. I carried him everywhere I went.

After a few weeks though, I really wanted to let him sleep upstairs, especially when we had company. I wasn’t comfortable having him on another floor without being completely confident that I would be able to hear him. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to hear him if he cried.

I decided to get an audio baby monitor and just leave it in the kitchen. If it was just left on, in the kitchen I would be able to hear anywhere on the bottom floor of the house.

Just remember if you choose to leave it on all the time like we did, every conversation that you have in ear shot of the baby monitor everyone not in the room can also hear. I was reminded of this a couple of times!

An audio baby monitor was sufficient for a few months. He was sleeping in the same room as me so I could him all night and with the monitor in the kitchen I could here him during the day if he was upstairs.

Then he became mobile. Once he became mobile, I knew I needed a video baby monitor. I wanted to be able to watch him during his independent play times.

I also really enjoyed being able to look at him at night. I noticed that sometimes if I went to check on him and he saw me, he wouldn’t want to go back to sleep as easily and quickly. With the monitor, I was able to look at him and determine if I needed to get up or if he was just rolling over and was going back to sleep.

He’s 13 months now and I have no plans of giving up my baby monitor anytime soon!
