How I Get Chores Done With a Toddler

Getting household chores done with a mobile toddler is tricky.

It was so much easier when he napped more often and when he stayed where I put him.

Now he crawls. He’s under my feet. He’s into anything he can reach and some things he can’t. I still don’t understand how he does that!

I bought him a playpen and I am so glad I did! He absolutely loves it and I can answer the front door without worrying about him.

Here are six pros for using a playpen with your baby or toddler:

Safe - A playpen is a safe place to leave your child when you need to have a shower, grab the laundry, or answer the front door, or any time you cannot directly supervise them. Our houses can dangerous for a baby. Sharp corners, decorations and small items are in any room, and if the child is left alone, he can play with them or put them in his mouth. Although an adult should always be there to protect their child from injuries and bruises but in practice it is difficult to achieve because sometimes Mom turns away, turns her attention to other things, is engaged in household chores, or needs to rest. In these moments it is necessary to somehow isolate the child from danger. And the playpen in this great help.

Fun - If you’ve let them spend time in the playpen from a young age your child will enjoy this space and happily play while you are busy.

Attention - You can get the bulk of your chores done at one time and then are better able to give your child all your attention later, rather than splitting your attention all day.

Skills - By spending time on independent play your child is learning valuable emotional and physical skills, feeling confident in your absence and experimenting autonomously.

Outside – Spending time outside has so many benefits. Playpens can be used outdoors, to allow the child to spend time in the fresh air, but without the fear of them crawling away too far. Enclosed space does not interfere with vision, so your toddler will still be able to enjoy the sights!

Traveling – If you go to someone’s house who does not have a baby, their house may not be baby proofed. A playpen is a great solution. They are easy to carry and set up and the baby will be safe. It allows you to move freely and interact with the whole family, without fear for the safety of your toddler.

There are three main types of playpens:

Standard Playpens – They have a raised floor, mesh sides and not much else. They are perfect for indoor play and are usually affordable.

Floorless Playpens – These can easily be set up in the corner of the room or outside. These are usually more spacious. Some come with toys to keep baby entertained, others do not.

Pack n Play – If you are planning to do a lot of traveling with your baby, a pack n play may be a perfect choice. In general, these playpens are smaller but they are compact and are easy to fold up and take anywhere.
