Place Value for Multi-Digit Whole Numbers

Place value is the position of a number that tells what value that number is assigned. Place value answers the question, “What is the value of the number?”

This can be a very confusing concept for a child. If his mother is in the living room, car or kitchen, she is still his mother. This isn’t true for numbers. Depending on where a digit such as the number 8 is in a number determines its value. The number 8 could represent 8 or 80 or 800, etc. It has a different value depending where it is.

Place value is a fundamentally important skill for all students to learn and master.
