I have recently become more and more curious about essential oils.
My baby can be a little fussy. He had heartburn and was very colicky when he was younger but has grown out of some of that. He still has trouble sleeping.

Although, I can be quick to pop a pill when I have a problem, I 'm really nervous about putting extra chemicals into his body. I want to give him something natural.
I have several friends who believe in essential oils wholeheartedly and have been telling me all about them and their benefits.
So, I decided to do some of my own research.
This is what I have discovered.
What are Essential Oils?
We have all interacted with essential oils. Essential oils are what gives a flower its beautiful scent. Essential oil therapy, also called aromatherapy, is defined as using naturally extracted plant aromas to promote physical and emotional health. Essential oils are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in leaves, herbs, flowers, wood, bark, needles, berries, roots and seeds.
Are they safe for babies?
Some essential oils are generally thought to be safe for babies if they are diluted with a carrier oil, not applied directly to the skin and never ingested. Essential oils should not be used at all on babies under 3 months old.
Not all essential oils are considered safe for babies. Always talk to your doctor before using therapeutic oils.
Essential Oils
Chamomile can be beneficial for babies who are having trouble sleeping.
Distilled Lemon can help lift energy and mood.
Dill is calming and can help soothe indigestion.
Eucalyptus can help unclog respiratory congestion.
Lavender can have a calming and sedative effect.
Mandarin has a calming effect.
Tea Tree is a natural antimicrobial, anti-fungal disinfectant.
Dilution Recommendations
The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy recommends a safe dilution ratio of .5 to 1 percent.
Suggested Ways to Use
Blend with a carrier oil. Vegetable oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil and peanut oil are all common carrier oils.
Spritz the diluted essential oil around the baby’s room. Avoid spritzing on anything the baby will rest his head on.
Diffuse with a water based vaporizer for a safe way to spread the scent around the baby’s room.
